Abstract:This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of antimicrobial peptides on growth and development of Rana zhenhaiensis tadpoles. Five hundred Rana zhenhaiensis tadpoles (Gosner 26 to 27 stages) were randomly allocated to 5 groups with 5 replicates per group and 20 tails per replicate. Tadpoles were fed the basic diet supplemented with 0, 1, 2, 4 and 8 mg/g antimicrobial peptides, respectively. The experiment ended when Rana zhenhaiensis tadpoles complete metamorphosis. The results as showed as follows:1) the concentration of antimicrobial peptides was significantly negatively correlated with the developmental stage of Rana zhenhaiensis tadpoles (P<0.001), but had no significant correlation with body length of Rana zhenhaiensis tadpoles (P=0.324). 2) The average value of metamorphic rate of Rana zhenhaiensis tadpoles was 94.6%, there were no significant differences among all groups (P=0.549), and had no significant correlation with the concentration of antimicrobial peptides (P=0.434). 3) The metamorphic time, body length and body mass of Rana zhenhaiensis tadpoles were significantly positively correlated with the concentration of antimicrobial peptides (P<0.001). 4) The jumping distance of Rana zhenhaiens abnormal froglets had no significant correlation with the concentration of antimicrobial peptides (P=0.578). 5) The concentration of antimicrobial peptides was significantly negatively correlated with the thigh muscle superoxide dismutase activity of Rana zhenhaiens abnormal froglets (P<0.001). These findings showed that antimicrobial peptides can slow down the development rate of Rana zhenhaiens, prolong the metamorphic time, and form larger the size at metamorphosis, thus improve the fitness of froglets.
