Abstract:The aim of this study was to determine the effects of rumen protected methionine (RP-Met) on growth, digestion, serum biochemical parameters and carcass quality of Tan lambs. Sixty-four Tan lambs with an average body weight of (19.06±0.46) kg were randomly assigned into 4 groups (4 pens per group, 4 lambs per pen), and fed basal diets with 0 (control), 0.03%, 0.06% and 0.09% RP-Met, respectively. The pre-feeding period lasted for 7 d, and test period lasted for 85 d. The results showed that compared with the control group, the average daily gain (ADG) and final body weight of Tan lambs increased significantly with the increase of RP-Met supplementation (P<0.05); dietary supplementation of 0.06% and 0.09% RP-Met could increase the slaughter rate (P<0.05); dietary supplementation with RP-Met had a tendency to reduce the carcass bone weight/carcass weight (P>0.05). With the increase of RP-Met supplementation, the apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, organic matter and neutral detergent fiber in the diet increased linearly (P<0.05); dietary supplementation of 0.06% RP-Met significantly increased the contents of serum total protein and albumin (P<0.05), and significantly decreased the content of serum urea nitrogen (P<0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation of RP-Met can improve the growth performance and carcass quality of the Tan lambs. The suitable supplementation is 0.06%.
