This trial was conducted to study the effects of dietary iodine supplementation levels on growth performance and serum biochemical indices of growing meat rabbits from weanling to 2-month-old. Eighty 35-day-old weanling New Zealand rabbits with average body weight of (780±50) g were randomly assigned to 4 groups with 20 replicates per group and 1 rabbit per replicate. The rabbits in 4 groups were fed basal diet supplemented with 0 (control), 0.1, 0.5 and 2.5 mg/kg iodine, respectively. The trial lasted for 7 days for adaptation, and 23 days for test. The results showed as follows: dietary iodine supplementation levels significantly affected average daily gain (ADG) (P<0.05) and the ADG in 0.1 and 0.5 mg/kg groups was higher than that in control group (P<0.05). The feed/gain (F/G) was significantly affected by the dietary iodine supplementation levels (P<0.05) and the F/G in 0.5 mg/kg group was lower than that in control group and 0.1 mg/kg group (P<0.05). The serum routine biochemical indices were not significantly affected by the dietary iodine supplementation levels (P>0.05). Dietary iodine supplementation levels significantly affected serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) content (P<0.05) and the IgA content in 0.5 mg/kg group was higher than that in other groups (P<0.05). The serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) contents were not significantly affected by dietary iodine supplementation levels (P>0.05). Dietary iodine supplementation levels significantly affected serum triiodothyronine (T3) content (P<0.01). With the increase of the iodine supplementation levels, the T3 content was increased firstly and then decreased, and the highest T3 content was found in 0.5 mg/kg group. There was no significant difference in serum tetraiodothyronine (T4) content among different groups (P>0.05). In conclusion, the appropriate iodine supplementation level in the diet of growing meat rabbits from weanling to 2-month-old was 0.5 mg/kg (the content of iodine in basal diet was 0.22 mg/kg).[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2010,22(4):1076-1080]
