Abstract

Weaning stress of piglets is always a tough problem in pig industry and animal nutriology. Weaning stress of piglets is often associated with reduced food consumption as well as temporary reductions in weight gain and growth, which can result in post weaning lag, a time of depressed feed intake and of increased diarrhea and disease, intestinal dysfunction and atrophy, and mortality in piglets. Recent research on the differences of between weaning and suckling piglets indicated that functional feeds are important to design feed ingredients and study new feed. This paper reviews on the advantages and effects of functional feed in intestinal health of piglets for its further research and application.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2010,22(1):10-17]
