Abstract

The study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary chitosan nanopartides loaded copper (CNP-Cu) on growth performance, immunity and antioxidant indices of weaned piglets. A total of 108 21-day-old three way cross (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshine) weaned piglets with an initial average body weight of (7.20±0.81) kg were randomly assigned into 6 groups with 3 replicates per group and 6 piglets per replicate. The piglets in control group were fed basal diet; Piglets in chlortetracycline (CTC) group were fed the basal diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg CTC, and piglets in four trial groups (Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ) were fed the basal diet supplemented with 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg/kg CNP-Cu, respectively. The experiment lasted for 28 days. After termination of the feeding trial, blood samples were collected from anterior vena cava of all piglets for serum indices analysis. The results showed as follows: 1) supplementation of CNP-Cu increased average daily feed intake and average daily gain, and decreased feed gain ratio and diarrhea rate, and the optimal supplemental level of CNP-Cu was 100 mg/kg (P<0.05). 2) Serum complement component 3, glutathione peroxidase activity and total antioxidant capacity were significantly increased with the supplementation of CNP-Cu (P<0.05). These results suggest that supplemental CNP-Cu has beneficial effects on immune and antioxidant function in weaned pigs, which also can increase growth performance and decrease diarrhea rate. Accordingly, CNP-Cu has a potential to substitute antibiotics.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2011, 23(10):1806 -1811]
