Since the outbreaks of the pet food contamination scandal in America in 2007, the excessive melamine eggs incident, and the melamine-tainted-milk powder incident in China in 2008, melamine has received considerable public concerns, especially in feed and food safety industry. A great deal of work on melamine has been carried out by researchers in recent two years. This article has mainly reviewed the latest progresses in physico-chemical property, toxicity, metabolism, and residues of melamine in animal products, which can establish the theory reference for inspecting and early warning of the potential hazards of animal products such as meat, eggs and milk, as well as, enhancing the feed safety supervision and legislation and ensuring food safety for human.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2011,23(2):187-195]
