Abstract:This study was to investigate the effects of benzoic acid on the growth performance, intestinal morphology and cecal microflora of white feather broilers. A single factor experiment design was used to select 360 1-day-old male broilers (Ross 308) and randomly divided into 3 groups with 6 replicates per group and 20 broilers per replicate. The supplemental levels of benzoic acid was 0 (control group), 0.7% and 1.4%, respectively; the test lasted for 21 days. The results showed as follows:1) compared with the control group, adding benzoic acid increased the average weight gain (AWG) of broilers at 21 days of age (P=0.066); adding 0.7% benzoic acid significantly increased the average feed intake (AFI) of broilers at 21 days of age (P<0.05). 2) Compared with the control group, addition of benzoic acid significantly increased the jejunum villous height and villous height/crypt depth (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in crypt depth (P>0.05). 3) Compared with the control group, there was no statistical difference in jejunal enzyme activity of broilers at 21 days of age (P>0.05), but numerically, adding 0.7% benzoic acid increased the jejunal enzyme activity. 4) Compared with the control group, addition of benzoic acid had no significant effect on cecal microflora of broilers (P>0.05), but numerically, the addition of benzoic acid reduced the number of Escherichia coli of broilers at 21 days of age. It can be concluded that benzoic acid can increase the jejunum villous height and villous height/crypt depth of broilers, and then improve the growth performance of broilers at 1 to 21 days of age, but has no significant effect on cecal microflora number; the effect of adding 0.7% benzoic acid in the diet is better for broilers at 1 to 21 days of age.
