Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of zinc methionine or zinc oxide on zinc metabolism of newborn calves. Thirty-six newborn Holstein dairy female calves were randomly assigned to 3 groups with 12 calves per group. Calves in the control group received no addition of zinc, calves in the zinc methionine group supplemented 457 mg zinc methionine per head per day (equivalent to 80 mg of zinc), and calves in the zinc oxide group supplemented 104 mg zinc oxide per head per day (equivalent to 80 mg of zinc). The experiment lasted for 14 days. The results showed as follow:1) dietary supplementation of zinc oxide or zinc methionine significantly increased the serum zinc content of calves (P<0.05). Dietary supplementation of zinc oxide or zinc methionine had no significant effects on contents of calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and phosphorus in serum of calves (P>0.05). 2) Dietary supplementation of zinc oxide or zinc methionine had no significant effects on serum zinc metabolism related indices of calves (P<0.05). 3) Dietary supplementation of zinc oxide had a tendency to increase the fecal zinc content of calves (P=0.079). In summary, under the condition of this experiment, dietary supplementation of zinc oxide or zinc methionine have not negatively influence the metabolism of trace elements such as copper, iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus of calves, and have no significant effects on serum zinc metabolism related indices. The serum zinc content of calves in zinc methionine group is higher than that in zinc oxide group, and the fecal zinc content is lower than that in zinc oxide group, which indicate that the bioavailability of organic zinc is higher than that of inorganic zinc.
