Abstract

An 8-week feeding experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of linseed oil on growth performance and meat quality of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Four isonitrogenous (crude protein content was 33.5%) experimental diets were formulated to contain 0 (control), 1.5%, 3.0% and 4.5% linseed oil based on a practical diet, respectively. A total of 360 GIFT strain tilapia with the initial average body weight of (9.15±0.03) g were randomly allocated into 4 groups with 3 replicates per group and 30 fish per replicate. The results showed as follows: the final body weight and specific growth rate in the 3.0% and 4.5% groups were significantly higher than those in the control group and 1.5% group (P<0.05), while the feed conversion ratio in the 3.0% and 4.5% groups was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). The protein efficiency rate in 4.5% group was significantly higher than that in the other groups (P<0.05). The content of whole-body crude lipid in the 4.5% group was significantly higher than that in the other groups (P<0.05), while the content of whole-body crude protein in the 3.0% and 4.5% groups was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). The contents of C20: 5n-3 (eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA) and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and n-3/n-6 PUFA in muscle in the 3.0% and 4.5% groups were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05), and the content of C22: 6n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid, DHA) in muscle in the 3.0% and 4.5% groups was significantly higher than that in the control group and 1.5% group (P<0.05). The content of C22: 5n-3 (docosapentaenoic acid, DPA) in muscle in the 3.0% group was significantly higher than that in the control group and 1.5% group (P<0.05). The content of PUFA in muscle in the 4.5% group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05), while no significant difference was found among 1.5%, 3.0% and 4.5% groups (P>0.05). The results indicate that linseed oil supplementation can improve the growth performance and meat quality of tilapia, and the suitable supplemental level is 3.0%.
