Abstract

To investigate the effects of supplying probiotics to calves on growth performance and health state, a Meta-analysis was conducted. The randomized controlled trials of supplying probiotics in calf production were searched, and the literatures were screened and extracted according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. STATA/MP14.0 software was used for Meta-analysis, and publication bias analysis, sub-group analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed for the included studies. A total of 34 studies were included. The results showed as follows:the Meta results showed that adding probiotics significantly increased average daily gain(ADG)(RMD=52.602 g/d,P<0.001)and body weight(RMD=2.390 kg,P<0.001), significantly decreased the ratio of feed to gain(RMD=-0.107,P<0.001),but had no influence on total dry matter intake(P>0.05). Additionally, feeding probiotics significantly increased immune globulin G (IgG) content in serum(RMD=0.340 g/L,P=0.028),and significantly decreased fecal scores(RMD=-0.080,P<0.001). Sub-group analysis showed adding single probiotics significantly increased ADG(RMD=58.657 g/d,P<0.001), body weight(RMD=2.517 kg,P<0.001), serum IgG content(RMD=0.331 g/L,P=0.013), significantly decreased the ratio of feed to gain(RMD=-0.127,P<0.001)and fecal scores(RMD=-0.073,P<0.001).Sub-group analysis on Bacillus, Lactobacillus and Saccharomyces showed that Bacillus significantly increased ADG(RMD=73.523 g/d,P<0.001)and body weight (RMD=3.097 kg,P=0.029),significantly decreased the ratio of feed to gain (RMD=-0.399,P<0.001),implying that Bacillus had the best effect of these three. Furthermore, probiotics supplied in whole milk significantly increased ADG(RMD=59.255 g/d,P<0.001), body weight(RMD=2.518 kg,P<0.001), serum IgA content(RMD=0.892 g/L,P=0.003),significantly decreased fecal scores(RMD=-0.157,P=0.009),implying that probiotics supplied in whole milk had better effect than that in milk replacer. Sensitivity analysis showed Meta-analysis results were stable and reliable, and there was a certain publication bias in the included literature. In summary, the results of this Meta-analysis show that adding probiotics can improve the growth performance, immune performance and health of calves.
