Abstract

To investigate the effects of different dietary ginger powder levels on performance and immune function of laying hens, 675 Hyline brown laying hens at 27 weeks of age were allotted into 5 treatments with 5 replicates per treatment and 27 hens per replicate. Laying hens were fed diets supplemented with 0, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% of ginger powder replacing equivalent wheat bran in the basal diet formulation for 70 days, respectively. Results showed as follows: the suitable dietary level of ginger powder significantly increased the egg mass, the laying rate in 3 to 4 weeks of the trial and the average egg weight in 1 to 2 weeks of the trial (P<0.05), reduced the ratio of feed to egg in 5 to 6 weeks and 9 to 10 weeks of the trial (P<0.05), but had no significant effects on the average daily feed intake of laying hens (P>0.05). Besides, laying hens fed the diets supplemented with the suitable level of ginger powder had a higher Avian influenza H9 and H5Re-5 antibody titer in the serum and the number of granulocyte in the blood at d 70 of the trial (P<0.05). The effect of 1.0% ginger powder was the best. In conclusion, ginger powder can improve the performance and immune function of laying hens, and the suitable supplemental dosage of ginger powder is 1.0%.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2011,23(3):459-465]
