The experiment was conducted to study the effects of dietary L-arginine (Arg) concentration on growth performance and visceral development in male lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenged goslings. One hundred and twenty-eight 14-day-old male Yangzhou goslings were randomly assigned to 4 groups, and each group had 4 replicates with 8 goslings per replicate. The four groups included A) nonchallenged group, B) challenged group, C) 0.5% Arg group and D) 1.0% Arg group. At 14-day-old, the goslings were weighed one by one. At 15, 17 and 19 days of age, goslings in groups B, C and D were injected with 0.5 mg/kg BW LPS, whereas goslings in group A were injected with an equivalent amount of sterile physiological saline solution. At 21-day-old, the goslings were weighed again and slaughtered to determine the weight of heart, liver, gizzard, spleen, thymus and bursa of Fabricius. The results showed as follows: 1) LPS reduced the daily weight gain in 3 weeks old goslings (P<0.05), and 0.5% Arg alleviated the decrease induced by LPS to some extent (P>0.05); 2) LPS reduced the weight of bursa of Fabricius in 3 weeks old goslings (P<0.05), and 0.5% Arg alleviated the decrease of the weight of bursa of Fabricius induced by LPS to some extent (P>0.05); LPS reduced bursa of Fabricius index of 3 weeks old goslings (P<0.05), 0.5% or 1.0% Arg increased the spleen index after LPS challenge (P<0.05); 3) LPS reduced the length of intestinal tract of 3 weeks old goslings (P<0.05), and 0.5% Arg alleviated the decrease of the length of intestinal tract induced by LPS to some extent (P>0.05). By measuring the growth and development of goslings, it indicated that L-arginine could alleviate the stress response of goslings induced by LPS to some degree.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2010,22(4):1071-1075]
