Effects of Pelleted Total Mixed Ration on Growth Performance, Rumen Fermentation Parameters and Serum Biochemical Indices of Hu Sheep

Abstract:This experiment was conducted to study the effect of pelleted total mixed ration (TMR) on growth performance, rumen fermentation parameters and serum biochemical indices of Hu sheep. Forty-eight Hu sheep, at the age of 120 days and weighing (31.40±0.55) kg, were randomly divided into 2 groups with 6 replicates in each group and 4 sheep (half male and half female) in each group. Sheep in control group were fed a TMR made of dried peanut vine and concentrate, and the test group was pelleted with the TMR of the control group and fed to Hu sheep. The pre-test period was 15 days and the trial period was 56 days. The results showed as follows: 1) the dry matter intake and average daily gain of the test group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P<0.05), but the feed/gain was not significantly different from that of the control group (P>0.05). 2) The concentrations of each volatile fatty acid and ammonia nitrogen in the rumen fluid of the test group were not significantly different from those of the control group (P>0.05), but the pH of the rumen fluid of the test group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05). 3) Compared with the control group, the serum biochemical indexes of the test group were not significantly different (P>0.05). 4) Compared with the control group, each sheep in the test group increased its profit by RMB 26.18. In conclusion, the pelleted TMR can improve the rumen fermentation, enhance the growth performance, and increase the economic benefits of Hu sheep.
