This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of high levels of dietary zinc and copper on growth performance, digestive physiology and cecal microbe of weanling piglets. One hundred and five weanling D×L×Y piglets at (25±1)-day-old were randomly allocated to 3 treatments with 5 replicates of 7 piglets per replicate. The pigs were fed basal diet, and basal diet supplemented with zinc (2 500 mg/kg) and copper (250 mg/kg) respectively for a 28-d experimental period. At the end of 3rd week, one piglet of each replicate was chosen to slaughter and to investigate the digestive enzyme activities and cecal microbe. The results showed that adding high levels of zinc and copper significantly increased ADG by 19.92% (P<0.05) and 23.24% (P<0.01), decreased the F/G by 6.67% (P>0.05) and 12.78% (P<0.01), respectively. Adding high levels of zinc and copper significantly improved digestibilities of Ca and P (P<0.05 and P<0.01). Pepsin activities and amylopsin activities were significantly increased in piglets fed diets supplemented with 2 500 mg/kg zinc or 250 mg/kg copper (P<0.05). Piglets fed high levels of zinc or copper had the tendency to improve villous length and the ratio of villous length to crypt depth (VCR) of jejunum, ileum and duodenum; the VCR of ileum was significantly increased (P<0.05); and the VCR of jejunum in high copper group significantly higher than that in control group and high zinc group (P<0.05). The amount of E.coli, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria in cecum tended to reduce in piglets fed diets with high levels of zinc or copper (P>0.05). In summary, high levels of dietary zinc or copper could increase growth performance, digestibilities of nutrient and activities of digestive enzymes; diet supplemented with high level of copper had better growth-improving effect than diet supplemented with high level of zinc in weanling piglets.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2009,21(6):903-909]
