Abstract

With the increasing of concentrate level in cow diet, rumen fluid pH falls, which causes subacute rumen acidosis (SARA) and produces a large amount of abnormal metabolites in the rumen. During SARA period, the peripheral blood LPS concentration increases, which can lead to systemic immune responses and metabolic alterations. Concentrations of plasma glucose and non-esterified fatty acid increase, and concentrations of plasma amino acids, β-hydroxybutyrate, cholesterol and minerals change, meanwhile, plasma hormone levels also change as a result of SARA challenge. These changes will result in the decreases in milk yield and the contents of milk fat and protein. This paper reviews the effects of LPS on plasma metabolites and hormones in dairy cows and the mechanisms are discussed.
