Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary crude fiber level and feeding time on the passage rate of digesta in the intestinal tract of growing pigs to provide a physiological data for the design of in vitro digestion. The dietary crude fiber levels of 3.39% and 5.56% and feeding time at 08:00 and 16:00 were used in a 2×2 factorial completely randomized arrangement. Twenty-four pigs [Duroc×Large, (21.90±1.62) kg] were randomly divided into 4 groups of 6 replicates with 1 pig in each. Pigs were fixed T-cannulas at the anterior duodenum in 2 groups and at the terminal ileum in the remaining 2 groups. The time of appearance and disappearance of ferric oxide (indicator) were observed on the duodenum, terminal ileum and the total digestive tract. The results showed as follows: 1) when the time of indicator color appearance as the passage rate of digesta, the dietary crude fiber level had significant effects on the passage rate of digesta in the duodenum, terminal ileum and total digestive tract (P<0.05), and feeding time had significant effects on the passage rate of digesta in the duodenum and terminal ileum (P<0.05), but had no significant effects in the total digestive tract (P>0.05). Significant interaction between them on the passage rate of digesta in the duodenum digesta was observed (P<0.05). Compared with dietary 3.39% crude fiber level, dietary 5.56% crude fiber level significantly fasten the passage rate of digesta (P<0.05); the passage rate of digesta fed at 08:00 (excepted for the total digestive tract) was significantly faster than that fed at 16:00 (P<0.05). 2) When the time of indicator color disappearance or mean time of appearance and disappearance as the passage rate of digesta, the dietary crude fiber level and feeding time had significant effects on the passage rate of digesta in the duodenum, terminal ileum and total digestive tract (P<0.05), there was no significant interaction between them on the passage rate of digesta in the duodenum and terminal ileum (P>0.05), but there was significant interaction on the passage rate of digesta in the total digestive tract (P<0.05). Compared with dietary 3.39% crude fiber level, dietary 5.56% crude fiber level significantly fasten the passage rate of digesta (P<0.05); the passage rate of digesta fed at 08:00 was significantly faster than that fed at 16:00 (P<0.05). These results indicate that 5.56% crude fiber level can increase the passage rate of digesta in the intestinal tract of growing pigs. The passage rate of digesta in pigs fed at 08:00 is faster than that fed at 16:00.
