Abstract

In recent years, the research on the function of rumen virome has attracted increasing attention. Among them, rumen bacteriophage, as the main abundant and most important main component of the rumen virome, has become a research hotspot. Rumen bacteriophage is an inherent part of the rumen microecosystem with protozoa, bacteria, archaea, fungi and viruses, together maintain the rumen microecology balance and determine the fermentation and utilization of indigestible plant feeds in the rumen. Rumen bacteriophages play an important role in maintaining the balance of rumen microbial populations, intra-ruminal microbial lysis, fiber decomposition, nutrient cycling and genetic material transfer. This paper reviewed the morphology, molecular biology and multi-omics research of rumen bacteriophage, particularly summarized the research progress on the role and function of rumen bacteriophage.
