Abstract

Ruminal microorganisms can degrade fibrous, which is difficult to use by other animals, into nutrients needed for host growth, thus providing humans with high-quality protein and other nutrients. Therefore, the regulation of rumen microorganisms to improve rumen fermentation function and ruminant growth performance has been one of the hot spots in ruminant nutrition research. The high stability of the rumen microbial community in adult ruminants has led to little success in regulation techniques. In contrast, the rumen micro-ecosystem of newborn ruminants is unstably established, and human intervention at this time may result in specific microbial community assemblages with lasting effects. Therefore, studying the colonization process of early rumen microorganisms is important for the scientific and precise regulation of rumen function. This review summarized the colonization process of various microorganisms during rumen development in neonatal ruminants, and then the latest research results on the early regulation of microbial community in young ruminants were reported, to provide a theoretical basis for the early regulation of rumen development in ruminants.
