Abstract

The rumen microbiota of early life is crucial for young ruminants' growth and development. Maternal microorganisms directly or indirectly affect the colonization and development of early rumen microbiota of young ruminants. Factors such as animal species, delivery mode, feeding mode of young animals, the composition of maternal diet during pregnancy and maternal feed additives can influence the vertical transmission of maternal microbiota to offspring and the development of metabolism, endocrine and immunity in early life. In this review, the composition and development of rumen microorganisms in early life and the main factors affecting the acquisition and inheritance of maternal microorganisms in early life were reviewed, in order to provide a reference for the vertical transmission of maternal microorganisms.
