This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of 1α-OH D3, and interaction between 1α-OH D3 and phytase on growth performance, tibia development, and meat quality of broilers aged from 22 to 42 days. Two trials were conducted in this study. In trial 1, ninety-six Arbor Acres (AA) broilers at 21 days of age with the same diet were allotted to 2 treatments with 4 replicates. Two diets in trail one were the basal diet 1 (NPP 0.13%. TP 0.35%) and the experimental diet, which was the basal diet 1 supplemented with 5 μg/kg of 1α-OH D3. In trial 2, a 2×2 factorial design was conducted to test the effects of supplementing 0 and 5 μg/kg 1α-OH D3 in combination with 0 and 500 U/kg phytase based on the basal diet 2 (NPP 0.20%, TP 0.42%). The fifth diet served as a control (NPP 0.35%, TP 0.57%). The results showed that tibia quality, plasma concentration of inorganic phosphate, and lightness of thigh meat were increased, while shearing force of thigh meat was decreased by dietary supplement with 1α-OH D3, however, dietary supplement with 1α-OH D3 did not significantly affected growth performance of broilers. When phytase was added, growth performance and tibia quality were improved, while yellowness and water-holding capacity of breast meat were declined. Dietary supplement with 1α-OH D3 and phytase did not improve growth performance, but the interaction between 1α-OH D3 and phytase increased the contents of tibia ash and phosphate. In conclusion, the addition of 1α-OH D3 individually or together with phytase improves the quality of bone and meat in broilers aged from 22 to 42 days.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2011,23(1):102-111]
