Abstract

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of alfalfa meal addition in diet on body weight, body measurements and internal organs development of Gushi chickens, and to find out alfalfa meal addition level that Gushi chickens could tolerate in diet. One thousand one hundred and fifty-two healthy Gushi chickens were selected and randomly assigned to six groups with four replicates in each group and forty-eight chickens (half male and half female) in each replicate. Six groups were fed diets with 0, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% alfalfa meal, respectively. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks. The results showed that there were no significant effects on body weight, body measurements, length of duodenum, jejunum, ileum and cecum, weight and indices of most internal organs of Gushi chickens at 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks of age between control group and exprimental groups (P>0.05). These results indicated that there were no significant effects on body weight, body measurements and most internal organs development of Gushi chickens with alfalfa meal content from 0 to 25% in diets. Gushi chickens could tolerate certain level of crude fiber in diet, and higher level alfalfa meal could be added to the diet of Gushi chickens.
