Abstract

The experiment was conducted to study the effects of Lactobacillus fermentum (L. fermentum) F-6 supplementation on the small intestinal villus structure of broilers. In the experiment, a total of 240 one-day-old AA broilers (half male, half famale) with similar body weight were randomly allotted to 4 treatments with 6 replicates in each treatment and 10 broilers in each replicate. The basal diet was mainly composed of corn and soybean. Broilers were fed four levels (0, 2×105, 2×106 and 1×107 CFU/mL, respectively) of L. fermentum F-6 in drinking water in a single factorial design. The trial lasted for 21 days. The results showed that adding L.fermentum F-6 could significantly increase length and width of villus in duodenum, jejunum and ileum, as well as the ratio of villus length to crypt depth (V/C) (P<0.05),and decrease the crypt depth (P<0.05). The positive effects of supplementation of 2×106~1×107 CFU/mL L. fermentum F-6 were the best. The quadratic regression results showed that the supplementation of 6×106 CFU/mL L.fermentum F-6 showed the best positive effects. In conclusion, the L. fermentum F-6 supplementation can improve the development of villus and mucous membrane structure in small intestine in broilers, which has a trend of quadratic regression equation between the effect and supplementation.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2011, 23(7):1194 -1200]
