Abstract

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of flavonoids from Scutellaria baicalensis on growth performance and immune functions of broilers. Five hundred one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers were randomly divided into 5 treatments with 5 replicates in each treatment and 20 broilers in each replicate. The basal diets were supplemented with 0 (control group), 5 (EG5), 10 (EG10), 15 (EG15) and 20 (EG20) mg/kg flavonoids from Scutellaria baicalensis, respectively. Growth performance, immune organ indices and immunoglobulin content were determined in different periods. The experiment lasted for 49 days. The results showed as follows: 1) BW of broilers in EG10 was the highest among the 5 treatments (P>0.05); ADFI of broilers was significantly increased in EG5 (P<0.05); supplementation of flavonoids from Scutellaria baicalensis had no effect on the F/G and ADG during the whole experimental period. 2) At 21 days of age, spleen index of broilers in the experimental groups were significantly higher than that in control group (P<0.05), and fabricius index of broilers in EG5 and EG10 was significantly higher than that in control group (P<0.05); at 35 days of age, spleen index of broilers in EG5 and EG10 was significantly higher than that in control group (P<0.05); at 49 days of age, thymus index of broilers in EG10 was significantly higher than that in control group. 3) The IgA content of broilers in EG10 was the highest during the whole experimental period(P>0.05); at 35 days of age, the IgG content of broilers in EG5, EG10 and EG15 was significantly higher than that in control group (P<0.05), and at 49 days of age, IgG content of all experimental groups was significantly higher than that in control group (P<0.05). In conclusion, supplementation of proper amount of flavonoids from Scutellaria baicalensis to the diet can improve growth performance and enhance immune organ growth and function of broilers; and 10 mg/kg group had the best effect among the five groups.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2011, 23(8):1409-1414]
