Abstract

This experiment was conducted to study the effect of dietary protein levels on suckling performance of female blue foxes (Alopex lagopus) during lactation. A total of 60 larva healthy blue foxes were randomly allocated to 4 groups with 15 replicates per group and 1 larva fox per replicate. Foxes were fed with 4 experimental diets which contained 39.84% (group Ⅰ), 35.69% (group Ⅱ), 32.49% (group Ⅲ) and 28.19% (group Ⅳ) protein, respectively. The results showed as follows: 1) foxes in different groups had no significant difference in litter weight of larva foxes at 10 and 20 days of age (P>0.05); the litter weight of larva foxes in group Ⅰ at 30 days of age was significantly higher than that in groups Ⅲ and Ⅳ (P<0.05); the litter weight of larva foxes in group Ⅰ at 40 days of age was significantly higher than that in group Ⅳ (P<0.05). 2) The litter average weight gain of larva foxes within 20 days of age showed no significant difference in the four groups (P>0.05); the litter average weight gain of larva foxes in group Ⅰ at 30 days of age was significantly higher than that in groups Ⅲ (P<0.01) and Ⅳ (P<0.05); the litter average weight gain of larva foxes in group Ⅰ at 40 days of age was significantly higher than that in group Ⅳ (P<0.05). 3) The survival rate in different periods in group Ⅰ was higher than that in other groups (P>0.05), and the survival rate in different periods were decreased with the decrease of dietary protein levels (P>0.05). In conclusion, the optimal protein level of female blue foxes during lactation is 39.84% under the conditions of this experiment.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2011, 23(9):1631 -1636]
