Abstract

The experiment was conducted to study the effects of different Lactobacillus forms on growth performance and small intestinal mucosa morphology of broiler chickens. A total of 240 one-day-old chickens were randomly assigned to 4 groups with 5 replicates per group and 12 chickens per replicate. Group Ⅰ was Lactobacillus solid preparation group (basal diet+0.2% L. graminis solid preparation); group Ⅱ was Lactobacillus liquid preparation group (basal diet+L. graminis liquid preparation); group Ⅲ was antibiotic group (basal diet+0.01% flavomycin); group Ⅳ was control group (basal diet). The experimental period was 14 days. The results showed as follows: compared with the antibiotic group and Lactobacillus solid preparation group, the average daily gain of broilers aged from 1 to 14 days in the Lactobacillus liquid preparation group was significantly increased (P<0.05); there was no significant difference in the ratio of feed to gain among all groups (P>0.05); the effect of liquid preparation was better than that of solid preparation. Lactobacillus preparation could increase the height of intestinal villus and decrease the depth of crypt to a certain extent, but only Lactobacillus liquid preparation had a significant effect (P<0.05). No significant difference was observed in the thickness of intestinal wall in different Lactobacillus preparation groups (P>0.05); the intestinal villus height/crypt depth of broilers in liquid Lactobacillus preparation group was significantly higher than that in the control group and antibiotic group (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the solid Lactobacillus preparation group, control group and antibiotic group (P>0.05). In conclusion, the supplementation of Lactobacillus preparation in the diet can increase the average daily gain, and improve small intestinal mucosa morphology of broiler chickens to a certain extent, such as an increase in the height of intestinal villus and a decrease in the depth of crypt. Furthermore, the effect of liquid preparation is better than that of solid preparation.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2011, 23(10):1812 -1818]
