Abstract

β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB), metabolite of leucine, has the potential of regulating muscle protein synthesis and catabolism, and keeping the plasmalemmal integrality. The contents of this review is to describe the formation and metabolism pathway of HMB, to summarize the effects of HMB on muscle metabolism, to provide an analysis of possible mechanisms that HMB may exert its effects, and to analyze the safety of HMB as an additive. This paper aims to provide a theoretical basis for the application of HMB in nutrition regulation.
