Effects of Dietary Astragalus Polysaccharides on Fat Traits in Serum and Yolk of Laying Hens

Abstract

The objective of this experiment was to study the effects of different dietary Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) levels on fat traits of laying hens. A total of 1 440 Hy-line laying hens at the age of 380 days with the same performance were randomly divided into 6 groups with 4 replicates per group and 60 hens per replicate. Laying hens in a control group (group Ⅰ) were fed a corn-soybean meal based diet, and others in experimental groups were fed the basal diet with 50 (group Ⅱ), 100 (group Ⅲ), 150 (group Ⅳ), 200 (group Ⅴ) and 250 mg/kg APS (group Ⅵ), respectively. The experiment lasted for 9 weeks including one week preliminary trial. The results showed that the ratios of feed to egg of laying hens in groups Ⅱ and Ⅳ were significantly lower than those in the control group and group Ⅴ (P<0.05). APS could decrease the contents of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in serum of laying hens to some extent. The TC content in serum of laying hens in group Ⅳ was the lowest of all groups, and there was a significant difference between group Ⅳ and the control group (P<0.05); the TC content in serum of laying hens in group Ⅱ was the lowest of all groups, and it was lower than that in the control group and group Ⅴ (P<0.05); the contents of LDL-C and HDL-C in serum of laying hens in group Ⅳ were the lowest of all groups, but there were no significant differences among all groups (P>0.05). The TG content in yolk of laying hens in groups Ⅱ, Ⅳ and Ⅵ was lower of all groups, and it was lower than that in the control group (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the three groups and the other groups (P>0.05). APS could decrease the contents of TG and LDL-C, increase the content of HDL-C in yolk to some extent, but there were no significant differences among all groups (P>0.05). In conclusion, APS can regulate lipid metabolism, and the range suitable for APS in the diet is from 50 to 150 mg/kg.
