Abstract

This experiment was conducted to explore the effects of different combination of organic acids on growth performance, diarrhea rate and microbial population in weaner piglets. A total of 540 crossed-bred (Landrace譟orkshine) piglets with an average initial body weight of (8.23?0.40) kg were randomly allotted to 6 groups with 6 replicates and 15 piglets with each replicate. The piglets in the control group were fed with a corn-soybean meal basal diet without any acidifier addition and the other piglets in the five exprimental groups were fed the same basal diet supplemented with one of five organic acids at the level of 0.3% . The formal experiment lasted for 28 days. Results showed as follow: during the whole experimental stage, compared with the control group, piglets fed diets containing organic acid A and B+C had greater average daily gain (P<0.01), and organic acid A, A+CE and A+C+CE supplementation significantly decreased feed/gain (P<0.05 or P<0.01). In addition, organic acid A,B+C and A+C supplementation groups exhibited lower diarrhea rate than the control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01), and showed positive effect of organic acids on diarrhea inhibition. Furthermore, organic acid supplementation resulted in decreased population of E. coli and C. perfringens in the feces (P<0.05 or P<0.01). At 38 and 45 days of age, organic acid A,B+C and A+C supplementation significantly inhibited S. aureus population in the feces (P<0.05 or P<0.01). However, compared with the control group, there was no difference in Lactobacilli population in organic acid supplementation groups (P>0.05). In conclusion, organic acids supplementation can improve the growth performance, feed utilization and gut health in weaner piglets, as evidenced by the reduced detrimental microbial population. And in the current experiment, organic acid A and B+C supplementation exhibit the best results.
