Effects of Rumen-Protected Arginine and Soybean Oil on Intramuscular Fat Content and Fatty Acid Composition in Fine Wool Sheep

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of the different levels of dietary rumen-protected arginine (RP-Arg) and soybean oil on the intramuscular fat content and fatty acid composition in fine wool sheep. Fifteen healthy fine wool sheep with similar body weight were randomly assigned into five groups. Sheep in the control group were fed a basal diet, and sheep in the experiment groups were fed diets supplemented with 1.5 g/d RP-Arg, 2.0 g/d RP-Arg, 1.5 g/d RP-Arg+3% soybean oil and 2.0 g/d RP-Arg+3% soybean oil, respectively. An adaptation period lasted for 5 days and was followed by an experiment period for 45 days. At the end of the experiment, two sheep in every group were slaughtered, and longissimus dorsi muscle tissue samples were collected for determination of meat quality indices and fatty acid composition. The results showed that the RP-Arg and soybean oil supplementation significantly increased the intramuscular fat content (P<0.05), but didn’t significantly affect other meat quality indices such as pH, holding water rate and cooked meat percentage (P>0.05). Polyunsaturated fatty acid content in the experiment groups was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). Furthermore, dietary RP-Arg and soybean oil had a trend to decrease the mRNA expression of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), while increase that of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) in longissimus dorsi muscle. In conclusion, the 1.5 g/d RP-Arg supplementation group and the 1.5 g/d RP-Arg+3% soybean oil supplementation group can get the better effects.
