Abstract

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of high calcium diet on nitric oxide (NO) concentration and antioxidant function of pullets. One hundred healthy pullets aged 35 days were randomly divided into 2 groups with 5 replicates in each group and 10 chickens per replicate. The pullets in different groups were fed normal calcium diet (control group, 1.00% calcium) and high calcium diet (HC group, 3.78% calcium), respectively. Healthy situations of the pullets were inspected daily. NO concentration, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and enzymatic antioxidant activity in serum were detected on days 0, 8, 16, 24 and 32 after feeding high calcium diet. The results showed as follows: 1) high calcium diet could cause diarrhea. Pullets would be hypercalcemia on day 8 after feeding high calcium diet. 2) There was no significant difference in serum NO concentration of pullets between HC group and the control group on days 8 and 16 after feeding high calcium diet (P>0.05), but that in HC group was significantly increased on days 24 and 32 after feeding high calcium diet (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and total anti-oxidation capability (T-AOC) of pullets between HC group and the control group on days 8 and 24 after feeding high calcium diet (P>0.05), but those in HC group were increased on day 16 after feeding high calcium diet (P<0.05), meanwhile, decreased on day 32 after feeding high calcium diet compared with the control group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in serum MDA content of pullets between HC group and the control group on days 8, 16 and 24 after feeding high calcium diet (P>0.05), but that in HC group was significantly increased on day 32 after feeding high calcium diet (P<0.05). There was a increasing trend in serum xanthine oxidase (XOD) activity in HC group on days 24 and 32 after feeding high calcium diet compared with the control group (P>0.05). The results indicate that high calcium diet can cause long-term diarrhea, increase the lipid peroxidation, and decrease the enzymatic antioxidant activity.
