Abstract

This experiment was performed with Shiqi beard broilers, which were fed the diet added with certain proportion of green bamboo extract (GBE), to investigate the effects of GBE on lipid metabolism. A total of 360 twenty-six-day-old Shiqi beard broilers were randomly divided into 4 groups (each group had 3 replicates of 30 birds each): broilers in control group were fed a basal diet, while broilers in experimental groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 g/kg GBE, respectively. The experiment lasted for 49 days. The results showed as follows: compared with the control group, the basal diet added with 1.5 and 3.0 g/kg GBE had significant effects on the reduction of broiler abdominal fat percentage (P<0.05). The basal diet added with 1.5 and 6.0 g/kg GBE had extremely significant effects on the reduction of broiler subcutaneous fat thickness (P<0.01). The contents of broiler liver fat and serum triglyceride were decreased obviously in the groups added with 6.0 and 3.0 g/kg GBE, respectively (P<0.01). However, there were no apparent effects on body weight, serum total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol contents (P>0.05). Compared with the control group, the addition of 1.5 and 3.0 g/kg GBE presented a significant improvement in serum leptin content (P<0.05), and the same as serum adiponectin content in the group added with 3.0 g/kg GBE (P<0.05). The serum superoxide dismutase activity was significantly improved in the groups added with 1.5 and 3.0 g/kg GBE (P<0.01), while malondialdehyde content was decreased significantly (P<0.01). Meanwhile, the group added with 3.0 g/kg GBE presented an extremely significant increase in serum glutathione peroxidase activity (P<0.01). It is concluded that the diets added with GBE can significantly reduce broiler fats and the diet supplemented with 3.0 g/kg GBE has a better effect.
