Gossypol is the main poisonous substance in cottonseed meal, which has cumulative toxicity for livestock and poultry, and has rich residues in animal products, and seriously affects the application of cottonseed meal in animal production. Recently, studies showed that gossypol could directly affect animal production performance, as well as indirectly affect human health. Based on the latest available information, the structure and classification of gossypol, and the toxicity, residual and eliminating rule of gossypol in table poultry, and the nutrition replenishment strategy to improve its feeding value were discussed in this review.
