Abstract

The objective of this study was to compare the development regularity of digestive organs and intestinal morphology between Maple Leaf ducks (MLD) and Cherry Valley ducks (CVD). Forty 1-day-old healthy Maple Leaf drakes and forty 1-day-old healthy Cherry Valley drakes were selected as the experimental animals. Each species as a treatment and each treatment had 5 replicates with 8 drakes per replicate. The experiment lasted for 35 days, and all experimental drakes were fed the same diet and accepted the same raising management during the experiment period. The results showed as follows: 1) the body weight (BW) of 2 species ducks was significantly increased with the days of age increasing (P<0.05), and the BW of MLD was significantly higher than that of CVD at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days of age (P<0.05); 2) MLD and CVD's development regularity of digestive organs were similar, and relative weight and length of all intestinal segments, and relative weight of pancreas were the highest on 7 days of age, while relative weight of liver, proventriculus and gizzard on 1 day of age was gradually reduced with the days of age increasing; 3) the relative weight of digestive organs and the relative length of small intestine of MLD were significantly lower than those of CVD (P<0.01); 4) the villus height and the ratio of villus height to crypt depth of duodenum of MLD were significantly higher than those of CVD (P<0.05), while no significant differences were found in crypt depth and intestinal wall thickness of all intestinal segments between MLD and CVD (P>0.05). It is concluded that following the embryonic period, 1 to 7 days of age is a critical period for the development of digestive organs of MLD and CVD, and the ample nutrition supply and good raising management should be guaranteed; the higher villous height and ratio of villous height to crypt depth of MLD indicate that MLD can digest and absorb nutrients more effectively.
