Abstract

A 2×3 factorial experiment design was used to determine the energy metabolic pattern and requirements for growing Dorper sheep. The factors were sex ( and ♀) and energy level (low, middle and high). In feeding trial, fifty-four Dorper sheep (27+27♀) at 15 days after weaning were randomly allotted to 3 treatments per sex with 3 replicates in each treatment and 3 sheep per replicate. Experimental sheep were fed ad libitum. The experiment lasted for 67 days including a 7-day pre-experimental period and a 60-day experimental period. In metabolic experiment, eighteen (9+9♀) Dorper sheep were randomly allotted to 3 treatments per sex with 3 replicate in each treatment and 1 sheep per replicate. The experiment lasted for 14 days including a 7-day-pre-experimental period and 7-day experimental period. The results showed as follows: DE/GE and ME/GE of the ram and ewe sheep were 63.07% and 51.80%, 61.59% and 50.76%, respectively. Formulas of requirements for metabolizable energy of growing Dorper sheep were predicated as follows, ram, ME=31.338ADG+424.728W0.75, ewe, ME=40.649ADG+406.122W0.75, Dorper sheep, ME=37.201ADG+399.671W0.75(ME was metabolizable energy, ADG was average daily gain, and W0.75 was metabolic weight). In conclusion, the metabolizable energy requirments for maintenance of ram and ewe of growing Dorper sheep are 424.73 and 406.12 kJ/kg W0.75, respectively, and those for 1 g of daily weight gain are 31.34 and 40.65 kJ, respectively; ram sheep have lower metabolizable energy requirment for growth and higher metabolizable energy for maintenance than ewe sheep; dietary proper digestible energy requirment for growing Dorper sheep is 10.66 MJ/kg (air-dry basis).
