Abstract

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of antimicrobial peptides (ABPs) supplementation on growth, non-specific immunity and disease resistance of koi (Cyprinus carpio koi). Four isonitrogenous (crude protein level was 32%) and isoenergetic (gross energy was 14.8 MJ/kg) experimental diets were formulated by supplementing with 0 (control), 75, 150 and 225 mg/kg ABPs—cecropin, respectively. Each diet was randomly fed one group of fish with an initial average weight of (10.30±0.01) g for 8 weeks. Each group had 4 replicates with 35 fish per replicate. The results showed as follows: the final body weight, specific growth rate (SGR) of koi in 150 mg/kg group were significantly higher than those in control group and 225 mg/kg group (P<0.05), whereas there were no differences between 75 and 150 mg/kg groups (P>0.05). No significant differences were found in feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and feed intake (FI) of koi among all groups (P>0.05). Serum alkaline phosphatase (AKP), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activities in 225 mg/kg group were significantly higher than those in control group and 75 mg/kg group (P<0.05), whereas there were no differences between 150 and 225 mg/kg groups (P>0.05). There was no difference in serum lysozyme (LZM) activity of koi among all groups (P>0.05). Moreover, the ABPs supplementation groups also exhibited a significant decrease in cumulative mortality compared with control group when challenged with Aeromonas veronii (P<0.05). It is concluded that ABPs supplementation can enhance the non-specific immunity and disease resistance, and then promote the growth of koi. And the optimum supplemental level of cecropin in the diet of koi is 150 mg/kg.
