Abstract

Teichoic acid is one of the major components of cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria, which plays important physiological roles in the self-protection, ionic equilibrium, cell division and the interaction with host cells. This review summarized the roles of teichoic acid in the adhesion, colonization and immune regulation of Gram-positive bacteria. The acceptors recognized by the teichoic acid were also discussed. This review will supply new clues for discovering the mechanism of adhesion and colonization of bacteria on the intestinal epithelium cells.
