Abstract

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of different relative humidity (RH) and ammonia (NH3) stress in poultry house on plasma ammonia level and cytokine contents of broilers. A total of 288 21-day-old broilers with an average bodyweight were divided into 6 treatments with 6 replicates per treatment and 8 broilers per replicate. The 6 treatments were as follows: Treatment 1, 30 mg/kg NH3+35% RH; treatment 2, 30 mg/kg NH3+60% RH, treatment 3, 30 mg/kg NH3+85% RH; treatment 4, 70 mg/kg NH3+35% RH; treatment 5, 70 mg/kg NH3+60% RH; treatment 6, 70 mg/kg NH3+85% RH. The experiment was conducted in climate chambers, and the experiment lasted for 3 weeks. The results showed as follows: 1) NH3 concentration had a significant influence on plasma ammonia level (P<0.05), the plasma ammonia level was increased with the increase of time in climate chambers. 2) RH had a significant influence on serum interleukin 1β (IL-1β) content at 3 weeks in climate chambers (P<0.05), the contents of IL-1β and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in serum were increased with the increase of time in climate chambers. 3) NH3 concentration had a significant influence on serum interleukin 4 (IL-4) content at 1 and 2 weeks in climate chambers (P<0.05), also had a significant influence on serum interleukin 10 (IL-10) content at 1 and 3 weeks in climate chambers (P<0.05). RH had a significant influence on serum IL-10 content at 1 week in climate chambers (P<0.05). It is concluded that RH and NH3 stress impair the immune function of broilers. With the increase of time in climate chambers, the body obtains certain ability to adapt to the environment, the immunosuppressive effects has a reduced tendency. Moreover, the immune suppression of broilers caused by 70 mg/kg NH3+85% RH cannot be alleviated.
