Abstract

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of riboflavin on the growth performance and antioxidant capacity of Peking ducks. The experiment was concluded two periods. The first period (1 to 21 days of age): a total of 128 one-day-old male Peking ducks with an average body weight were randomly divided into 2 treatments (riboflavin deficient group and control group) with 8 replicates per treatment and 8 ducks per replicate. The ducks in the riboflavin deficient group were fed a basal diet (without riboflavin) and those in the control group were fed the basal diet supplemented with 7 mg/kg riboflavin. The second period (22 to 33 days of age): forty Peking ducks with an average body weight from the riboflavin deficient group were randomly divided into 2 treatments (riboflavin deficient group and riboflavin supplemented group) with 5 replicates per treatment and 4 ducks per replicate. The ducks in the riboflavin deficient group were fed a basal diet (without riboflavin) and those in the riboflavin supplemented group were fed the basal diet supplemented with 7 mg/kg riboflavin. The results showed that compared with the control group at 1 to 21 days of age, the final body weight, average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and the riboflavin content in liver and plasma in the riboflavin deficient group were significantly decreased (P<0.05), while the plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) content was significantly increased (P<0.05). The ducks in the riboflavin deficient group were supplemented riboflavin at 22 to 33 days of age, compared with the riboflavin deficient group, the final body weight, ADG, ADFI and the riboflavin content in liver and plasma in the riboflavin supplemented group were significantly increased (P<0.05), while the MDA content was significantly decreased (P<0.05). In conclusion, dietary riboflavin deficiency can decrease the growth performance and plasma antioxidant capacity of Peking ducks at 1 to 21 days of age, while supplemented with riboflavin can improve the growth performance and plasma antioxidant capacity of Peking ducks at 22 to 33 days of age.
