Abstract

The high incidences of mastitis and metritis in dairy cows during periparturient and early lactation periods are main factors affecting mammary gland health, milk yield and milk qualitative. The increase of incidences and severity of mastitis and metritis may be caused by the disorder of mammary immune function in dairy cows during the periparturient period. The progressive development of oxidative stress during transition period from late gestation to peak lactation is a significant underlying factor leading to dysfunctional responses of immune function of mammary gland. The microelement of selenium (Se) can improve immune function by ameliorating oxidative stress, and reducing the incidences and severity of mastitis and metritis in dairy cows. This review summarized the occurrence of oxidative stress, the effects of oxidative stress on immune function and the effects of Se on immune function and the mechanism of mammary gland in dairy cows.
