Abstract

Nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is an important molecule in antioxidative and redox signaling. Nrf2 can be activated by conformational change of Keap1 or Nrf2 itself phosphorylation. The activated Nrf2 enters the nucleus and binds with antioxidant response element (ARE) to transactivate the expression of a series of antioxidant enzyme genes against the harmful stimuli. This review summarizes Nrf2-mediated antioxidant pathway and its regulatory role in anti-stress, meat quality, development of feed additives, and the impact in maintaining the health of livestock and poultry.
