Abstract

As the basis of life activities, the homeostasis of glucolipid metabolism plays an important role in maintaining normal physiological functions in the body. The hypothalamus is the central regulation site of glucolipid metabolism. The role of orexin-A, which is secreted by the hypothalamus, in regulation of glucolipid metabolism has attracted increasing attention. Orexin-A can modulate the production and utilization of peripheral glucose and lipid though the autonomic nervous system. The orexin-A, generated in peripheral tissues, can also maintain the balance of glucolipid metabolism by regulating the activity and number of related enzymes. This review was about the structures and characteristics of orexin-A and its receptors and about the functions of orexin-A in maintaining homeostasis of glucolipid metabolism and signal transduction pathways. Besides, this review summarized the relationship between the regulation effects of orexin A on glucolipid metabolism and animal production.
