Abstract

Feed processing has more impact on reducing feed production cost and can improve pig performance as the rise in prices of feedstuff and shortage of resources. Conventional extrusion technology could partially remove anti-nutritional factors and pathogens and improve feed efficiency. Besides the advantages mentioned above, the newly developed expansion technology could increase feed throughput, save energy, and release other nutrients. Expansion could also destroy structure of fiber in agri-industrial byproducts and make it feasible as a feed ingredient. Extensive experiments proved the positive effects of the two processing technology on performance of weanling pigs, finishing pigs, and gestating sows. The expansion technology will play a bigger role in the feed industry and animal production in the future. This article reviewed great application potential and good actual effect of extrusion and expansion technology.
