Abstract

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of acidifier on performance, egg quality and selected indices of gastrointestinal tract in laying hens. A total of six hundreds and seventy two 25-week-old Lohmann brown laying hens were assigned to the following 4 groups with 7 replicates per group and 24 hens per replicate. Control group was fed with basal diet, while the other 3 groups were fed 0.05%, 0.10% and 0.20% acidifier based on the basal diet, respectively. The experiment lasted for 60 d. Results suggested as follows: 1) compared with control group, 0.05% acidifier had significantly higher average daily feed intake (P<0.05). The ratio of feed to egg weight was significantly increased with the addition of 0.20% acidifier (P<0.05). 2) Compared with control group, supplementing the diet with acidifier significantly increased eggshell strength on days 30 and 60 (P<0.05). The albumen height was significantly decreased with the addition of 0.20% acidifier on days 30 and 60 (P<0.05). 3) Compared with control group, dietary acidifier significantly decreased the population of Escherichia coli in digestible tract (P<0.05), but pH in digestible tract was significantly unaffected (P>0.05), at the same time, the activities of amylase and trypsin in duodenum were significantly enhanced (P<0.05). 4) Compared with control group, adding acidifier was significantly improved the apparently metabolic rate of calcium and phosphorus on days 30 and 60 (P<0.05). In conclusion, dietary acidifier supplementation has the potential to enhance the enzyme activities and apparently metabolic rates of calcium and phosphorus, thus improve performance, egg quality and intestinal microecology environment in laying hens.
