Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate the net energy of corn and to establish prediction models for net energy of corn based on its chemical composition for Tianfu ducks. A total of 860 ducks with an average weight of (125.01±11.33) g at the age of 7 days were picked out for the experiment. The duck from 4 to 7 days of age was the pretest period of the experiment, and the formal experiment period was from 7 to 15 days of age. The net energy of corn equivalented to the sum of the net energy for maintenance (NEm) and net energy for production (NEp) on ducks. NEm was estimated by fasting heat production (FHP). The FHP was measured by establishing regression equation and extrapolating HP measured at 5 feeding levels including ad libitum and restricted feeding by 20%, 32%, 44% and 54% to zero ME intake. A total of 120 ducks were selected for the evaluation of NEm from which 20 ducks were slaughtered at 7 days of age to obtain baseline body energy. The other 100 ducks were randomly allotted to the 5 feed levels. NEp was calculated using the comparative slaughter technique. A total of 740 ducks were picked out for the experiment of NEp, from which 20 ducks were killed to obtain baseline body energy at the beginning of the experiment and others were randomly allotted to 36 corns. Both in the experiment of NEm and NEp each treat group was provided to 20 ducks housed in cages with 4 ducks per repetition and 5 replications. At the end of experiment all ducks were slaughtered to determine final body energy. Multiple linear stepwise regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the predictability of the net energy values and the chemical composition of corns. The results showed that NEm and NEp of duck provided by corn were (8.49±0.35) and (0.95±0.05) MJ/kg, respectively. The NE of corn were (9.44±0.35) MJ/kg, and the net energy values contributed (70.12±2.00)% of the apparent metabolizable energy. The best prediction model was NE=6.956-0.13NDF+0.446EE-0.264ADF+0.241AME, in which R2 and RSD were 0.923 and 0.03 MJ/kg, respectively. Therefore, it is feasible to evaluate NE of corn by prediction model established based on its chemical composition.
