Abstract

The experiment was conducted to determine the effect of dietary Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) supplementation on serum urea nitrogen level and immunity function of weaning piglets infected by rotavirus (RV).Twenty-four healthy crossbred (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) piglets weaned at 21 days of age were used in a 2×2 factorial design. The main factors consisted of diets (control diet or supplementing 109 CFU/kg LGG diet) and RV infection (oral infusion with RV or sterilized MEM medium).RV infection was carried out on day 15.The whole experiment lasted for 19 days. The results showed that RV challenge significantly increased feed/gain (F/G) and the serum urea nitrogen (UN) content of weaning piglets (P<0.05), significantly decreased the numbers of CD3+ and CD4+ T lymphocytes and the CD4+/CD8+ in the blood (P<0.05), significantly decreased the content of immunoglobulin G (IgG), immunoglobulin A (IgA) and interleukin (IL)-4 in serum (P<0.05), and significantly increased the content of IL-2 and RV specific antibody in serum (P<0.05).Dietary LGG supplementation significantly reduced F/G and serum UN content of weaning piglets (P<0.05), increased the number of CD4+ T lymphocyte in blood (P=0.09), and significantly increased the contents of IgG and IL-4 in serum (P<0.05).In addition, compared to the RV infected piglets fed the control diet, dietary LGG supplementation significantly decreased the F/G and serum UN content of RV infected piglets (P<0.05), and significantly increased the number of CD4+ T lymphocyte of blood and the content of IL-4 in serum (P<0.05).These results suggest that dietary LGG supplementation can improve the growth performance of weaning piglets infected by RV possibly via alleviating the effect of RV infection on the protein metabolism and the immunity.
