Abstract

This study was to investigate the effects of low protein diets with different sorghum levels on growth performance, meat quality and serum amino acid concentration of growing pigs. Thirty-six crossbred (Duroc×Landrace) growing pigs with body weight of (30±7) kg were randomly divided into 6 groups with 6 replicates per group and 1 pig per replicate. Pigs in the six groups were fed the experimental diets which the sorghum and CP levels were 0 and 18% (group A), 0 and 15%(group B), 20% and 15%(group C), 50% and 15%(group D), 80% and 15%(group E), 50% and 18%(group F), respectively. The pre-experimental period lasted for 6 days, and the experimental period lasted for 35 days. The results showed as follows:1) when dietary CP level reduced 3%, there were no significant differences on the average daily feed intake, average daily gain and feed to gain ratio between group A and group B, group D and group F (P>0.05). When dietary CP level was 18%, the average daily feed intake of group F was significantly higher than that of group A (P<0.01), and the average daily gain was significantly higher than that of group A (P<0.05). When dietary CP level was 15%, the average daily feed intake of groups D and E was significantly higher than that of group B (P<0.01), the average daily gain of group E was significantly higher than that of group B (P<0.05). 2) There were no significant differences on meat quality indices among all groups (P>0.05). 3) When dietary CP level reduced 3%, there were no significant differences in the serum amino acid concentrations in anterior vena cava, mesenteric vein and portal vein between groups A and B (P>0.05). When dietary CP level was 15%, compared with group B, the serum essential amino acid histidine concentration in anterior vena cava, mesenteric vein and portal vein of groups C, D and E was decreased, the concentrations of nonessential amino acid proline, serine and alanine in anterior vena cava serum were increased, the concentrations of nonessential amino acid proline and alanine in mesenteric vein and portal vein serum were increased. In conclusion, 20% to 80% of sorghum level can replace corn as the energy raw material for growing pigs when dietary CP level is 15%.
