Abstract

The objective of this trial was to investigate the effects of different zinc sources on growth performance, serum hormone and immune indices of newborn calves. Thirty-six newborn Holstein dairy female calves were randomly assigned to 3 groups with 12 calves per group. Calves in control group were no addition, and others in experimental groups were added 457 mg zinc methionine and 104 mg zinc oxide (equivalent to 80 mg zinc) per calf every day, respectively. Zinc methionine and zinc oxide were mixed with milk and fed directly to the calves. The whole experiment lasted for 14 days. Starter diet was supplemented to all calves on the fourth day after birth. Incidents of diarrhea and feed intake of individual calf were recorded every day. Calves were measured for body height, body slant length, bust and weight after birth and before feeding on the morning of 15 days of age. Meanwhile, blood samples were taken from all the calves before feeding on the morning of 15 days of age, and the contents of immunoglobulin and hormone in the serum were measured. The results showed as follows:1) compared with the control group, dietary supplementation of zinc methionine significantly increased the average daily gain of calves (P<0.05), significantly decreased the diarrhea rate of calves (P<0.05). Different zinc sources did not significantly influence the average daily feed intake, total body height gain, total body slant gain and total bust gain of calves (P>0.05). 2) Compared with the control group, dietary supplementation of zinc methionine and zinc oxide significantly decreased the serum insulin content of calves (P<0.05). 3) Compared with the control group, dietary supplementation of zinc oxide significantly increased the contents of immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M in serum of calves (P<0.05). And no significant difference was observed in serum immunoglobulin A content of calves among all groups (P>0.05). In summary, supplementation of zinc methionine to newborn calves effectively promotes calf growth, and reduces the diarrhea rate, while supplementation of zinc oxide helps to improve the immune function of calves.
