Abstract

A 60-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of different chromium sources on growth performance, serum biochemical indices and hepatopancreas glycometabolism enzyme activities of common carp fed high glucose diets. Four purification diets were formulated including a basal diet without chromium supplementation (control group) and three experimental diets[the basal diet supplemented with chromic oxide (Cr2O3), chromium pyridine carboxylate (CrPic) and methionine chromium (CrMet), respectively], and chromium supplemental level[calculated as trivalent chromic ion (Cr3+)] in experimental diets was about 2.60 mg/kg, respectively, and the basal diet (without chromium). A total of 720 common carps with initial body weight of (40.95±4.80) g were selected and randomly divided into four groups with 3 replicates per group and 60 carps per replicate. Each diet was fed to one of the groups, and the group fed the basal diet was control group. The results showed as follows:compared with control group, the supplementations of CrMet and CrPic significantly increased weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and feed efficiency (FE) (P<0.05); the supplementation of Cr2O3 significantly increased WGR and SGR (P<0.05); the supplementations of three sources of chromium had no significant effects on content of moisture, protein and ash of whole body (P<0.05), while lipid content of whole body was significantly increased by the supplementations of CrPic and CrMet (P<0.05); muscle glycogen content was significantly increased by the supplementations of that were fed the basal diet were lower than those given the other diets (P>0.05), and hepatic glycogen content was significantly increased by the supplementation of CrMet (P<0.05); serum cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) contents were significantly decreased by the supplementation of CrMet (P<0.05); the contents of insulin (INS), insulin receptor (ISR) and growth hormone (GH), and the activities of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase (CK) in serum were significantly increased by the supplementation of CrMet (P<0.05), while the contents of glucose and cortisol (COR) in serum were significantly decreased (P<0.05); the supplementations of three sources of chromium significantly increased the activities of hexokinase (HK) and pyruvate kinase (PK) in embden-meyerhof-parnas pathway (P<0.05), but significantly decreased the activities of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) activities in glyconeogenesis pathway in hepatopancreas (P<0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation of CrMet has the most obvious effects on promoting growth, improving feed utilization and glucose utilization of common carp fed high glucose, the next in order is CrPic, and the effects of Cr2O3 are not so good.
