Abstract

The rumen harbors a great diversity of microorganisms that provide energy and nutrients for both maintenance and production of ruminant animals. Manipulating rumen microbiota could increase feed utilization and decrease metabolic by-products in the rumen, resulting in enhanced economic benefits and reduced pollution in ruminant production. Recent studies showed that rumen microbiota were very important for nutritional metabolism and body development of young ruminant animals. This article reviewed the development and manipulation of early-life rumen microbiota, so as to provide a reference for the application of early-life rumen microbiota manipulation in practical ruminant production.
