Abstract

During the differentiation and development of neural crest cells into ears, abnormalities in any of the processes may lead to ear malformation phenotypes. Retinoic acid and Hox genes play key roles in the normal development of ear. Retinoic acid is the main derivative of vitamin A and is one of the micronutrients needed for the normal development of embryos. Hox gene is a major gene that regulates embryonic development and cell differentiation. In this paper, ear development and the relation between retinoic acid and Hox genes are reviewed, with an aim of further clarifying the formation and repair mechanism of abnormal ears in mammals, and providing information of how to reduce the bad effects of abnormal ear on animal health and performance.
